The 99 Names
Ninety-nine ways
to know One
Muslims know God by His Names: the Merciful, the Light, the One who answers. They are not ninety-nine parts of God, and not ninety-nine gods. Each is a way of turning towards the One who is, in the Qur'an's words, “nothing like Him”.
Why 99?
A hundred less one
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said God has ninety-nine Names, “a hundred less one”, and that whoever takes them to heart enters Paradise (Bukhari and Muslim). The best-known list comes from a later collection, Tirmidhi; scholars drew up others. The Qur'an says: “To God belong the most beautiful Names” (7:180).
And more besides
A prayer the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught asks God by “every Name You have, which You named Yourself… or kept in the knowledge of the unseen with You” (Ahmad). So ninety-nine is a door, not a fence.
How each series works
Every Name opens like a short series. It starts with something we know (a mother's care, an owl's hearing, a telescope), then takes away what that needs: time, distance, tiredness, limits. The last episode, the Break, is what remains.
