Job: protest and patience

A good man loses everything. What then?

Shared Stories · Job: protest and patience

Job (peace be upon him) is remembered by all three faiths: a righteous man who loses everything, and is restored.

In the Torah and the rabbis

The book of Job: the heavenly wager, three friends who explain too much, Job's honest protest, and God speaking “out of the whirlwind” (Job 38:1). The rabbis even argue over whether Job lived or was a parable (Bava Batra 15a).

In the Gospels and Christian tradition

James holds up “the perseverance of Job” (James 5:11, WEB) as a model for believers.

In the Qur'an

A short, intimate prayer: “Harm has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful” (21:83). He strikes the ground and a spring flows (38:42). “We found him patient. What an excellent servant!” (38:44).

Same and different

The Hebrew Bible keeps Job's protest; the Qur'an his patience; James his perseverance. Both protest and patience can be faithful responses to suffering.

We never picture any prophet or Mary. Each panel is checked by a reader from that tradition before this page goes public.
