Noah and the flood

One man warns; an ark; a flood; a promise to all life.

Shared Stories · Noah and the flood

Noah (peace be upon him) is remembered by all three faiths as the one righteous man of a corrupt age, who built an ark and was saved through the flood.

In the Torah and the rabbis

Genesis 6–9: the ark rests on Ararat (8:4), and God makes a covenant with every living creature, sealed by the rainbow (9:12–17). From Noah come the seven Noahide laws for all humanity. The rabbis debate whether “righteous in his generation” is high praise or faint praise (Sanhedrin 108a).

In the Gospels and Christian tradition

Jesus (peace be upon him) compares the days before the end to the days of Noah (Matthew 24:37–39); 1 Peter 3:20–21 sees the ark as a picture of baptism.

In the Qur'an

Noah preaches for “a thousand years minus fifty” (29:14). His own son refuses to board and drowns, and God tells Noah, “he is not of your family” (11:46). The ark comes to rest on al-Jūdī (11:44). A whole chapter, surah 71, is named after him.

Same and different

The same warning and rescue. Genesis ends on God's covenant with all life; the Qur'an stresses faith over blood ties; Christians see salvation through water. Kids can meet the raven and the dove in Young Explorers.

We never picture any prophet or Mary. Each panel is checked by a reader from that tradition before this page goes public.
