Who is Allah?

The 99 Names · Name 2 of 99 · Act

الرَّحِيمُ

ar-Raḥīm

The Especially Merciful; mercy that is shown, again and again, to those who turn to Him

Begin the series ↓

Recited as it sounds in the Qur'an, 1:3.

Heard together with: ar-Raḥmān / ar-Raḥīm

Start with what we know

Then take away everything it needs. What is left is not a bigger version of us. It is the Name.

Episode 1

In us

A parent who takes a child back after it has gone wrong: Luke 15:20, the father who 'ran, and fell on his neck'

But: Takes back some, some of the time; patience runs out; memory of the hurt stays

Episode 2

In nature

The mare of Bukhari 6000 lifting her hoof from her foal; in biology, maternal care in mammals is mostly short and conditional

Episode 3

At our best

Restorative justice programmes (UK Restorative Justice Council); prisoner education and re-entry schemes

But: Need consent from victims, staff and money; success rates vary

Episode 4

The Break

Take away a limit on how often, a memory that holds the grudge, the need to be repaid.

Not mercy that tries harder, but mercy that does not run out of second chances.

Read: Q 33:43; 2:143; 39:53

From the tradition: Bukhari 6469: had the non-believer known all the mercy with Allah he would not lose hope of Paradise. Ashʿarī/Atharī commentators: Raḥīm is the mercy that reaches, again and again

On screen

In the film, family means nobody gets left behind. ar-Raḥīm means the door you left by is still open.
