Wonder,
not proof
Why we never say a verse “predicted” science.
Signs · Wonder, not proof
You will find videos online claiming the Qur'an “predicted” the Big Bang, embryology or the speed of light. We don't make those claims, and many Muslim scholars warn against them. When science changes, a faith tied to yesterday's science looks foolish; and sceptics take such claims apart easily.
What we do instead: show what the verse says, how classical scholars read it, and what science says today, side by side. The wonder stands on its own.
| Verse | The words | The modern claim | The honest reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15:22 | “Fertilising winds” | Wind pollination foretold | Classical commentators already read it as winds fertilising clouds and trees, from Arabian palm farming. A lovely word, not a prediction. |
| 57:25 | “We sent down iron” | Iron from meteorites or stars | The same verb is used of livestock (39:6) and clothing (7:26): “provided”. Iron forged in stars is a wonder of its own. |
| 41:11 | Heaven “as smoke” | A nebula | Classical readers: vapour. How the solar system formed is a separate wonder. |
| 79:30 | The earth “spread out” | An egg-shaped Earth | The verb means spread out. |
| 39:5 | Night “wound” over day | A spherical Earth | Kawwara, to wind like a turban: an image. |
| 27:88 | Mountains passing like clouds | Earth's rotation, plate tectonics | The context is the Last Day (27:87). |
| 86:3 | “The piercing star” | A pulsar | Classical: a bright star piercing the dark. |
| 86:11 | “The sky that returns” | The atmosphere reflecting radio waves | Classical: the sky that returns rain. |
| 75:4 | Fingertips | Fingerprints | Classical: God can restore even the finest parts. |
| 51:49 | Everything in pairs | Matter and antimatter, DNA | Ibn Kathīr's list: heaven and earth, night and day, light and darkness, life and death. |
| 22:47 | A day like a thousand years | Relativity | The same image as Psalm 90:4 and 2 Peter 3:8: God beyond our time. |
| 54:1 | The moon split | “NASA confirmed it” | Report the classical event honestly, and the internet hoax honestly too. |
The same honesty, turned on ourselves
Jews and Christians have the same temptation: Isaiah 40:22's “circle of the earth”, or Job 26:7, “He hangeth the earth over nothing”, read as modern astronomy. They are beautiful lines about God's greatness, not science lessons. We, not you: every faith can do better here.
