Both sides, fairly, in scientists' own words.
Big Questions · Does science rule out God?
Open Updated November 2026
On every big question we looked at, serious scientists and philosophers stand on both sides, and none of them is settled by the evidence. That is the honest position.
What scientists actually say
The fit between mathematics and physics is “a wonderful gift which we neither understand nor deserve.”Eugene Wigner, physicist, 1960
The comprehensibility of the world is “a miracle.”Albert Einstein, 1936
Alexander Vilenkin, co-author of the best-known theorem that the universe had a beginning, says it does not settle God either way. Jim Al-Khalili, a former president of Humanists UK, says the most wondrous thing is that the world is “rational and explicable”. Wonder is shared ground.
Where things stand, November 2026
The Big Bang model is the consensus; what happened at or before the start is open. The origin of life is an active field, with strong partial chemistry and no complete pathway. On consciousness, a major 2025 test found no winner between the two leading theories.
Muslim, Jewish and Christian scientists, such as Nidhal Guessoum, Rana Dajani, Jonathan Sacks and John Polkinghorne, accept mainstream science and still believe. Many scientists do not believe. Both are part of the conversation.
