الْأَحَدُ

al-Aḥad

The Unique, One and indivisible

Begin the series ↓

Recited as it sounds in the Qur'an, 112:1.

Heard together with: al-Wāḥid / al-Aḥad / aṣ-Ṣamad

Start with what we know

Then take away everything it needs. What is left is not a bigger version of us. It is the Name.

Episode 1

In us

Everything we thought was one has come apart. “Atom” means “uncuttable”; Rutherford split it.

Episode 2

In nature

A body is trillions of cells; a cell is molecules; a molecule is atoms.

Episode 3

At our best

Even protons are made of quarks, held by the strong force (CERN). Every “one” in physics so far has had parts.

Episode 4

The Break

Take away parts, assembly, division. Everything we called uncuttable came apart. al-Aḥad has no parts to come apart. “Say: He is God, One” (Qur'an 112:1).

Read: 112:1–4; 'al-Aḥad' with the article appears only in hadith.

From the tradition: Al-Rāzī: aḥad means no parts at all; Sunni formula: attributes 'not He nor other than He'; Maimonides: no body (MT 1:7).

On screen

The films imagine someone gathering infinite power. The Names describe the One who never had to gather anything.

Where it shows up

In scripture
Q 112; Deut 6:4.
The same thread in Jewish and Christian scripture
Shema eḥad (Deut 6:4) cognate; Christian Trinitarian doctrine differs : state honestly. Strong/with difference.
In the universe
Particle physics at CERN.
In nature
—
In people
Surah al-Ikhlāṣ: 'a third of the Qur'an' (Bukhari 5013).
In science
Atomic history: atomos → electron (1897) → nucleus (1911) → quarks.

Living it

Sincerity (ikhlāṣ): an undivided heart.

Its kind

Beyond: majesty: what He is not, and how far beyond.

In the Qur'an: 112:1
